A lot on his plate
Creativity comes in many forms and for some, it is not so immediately clear where that creativity lives. For Michael Long, his creativity was always lurking, revealing itself in the food he cooked and the presentation choices he made when plating his food. They say the kitchen is the heart of the home and kitchen design is generally the most meticulously crafted space for any interior designer. So, it seems for Michael to pivot from chef to interior designer, is not in fact a massive departure.
Michael is currently a student of the Australian Academy of Interior Design and his time as a private chef in luxury interior spaces was his inspiration.
From South Africa to New Zealand, Michael has never been afraid to pursue his dream. He always wanted to be a chef and knew the best opportunities lived in Auckland. Having uprooted himself, Michael went on to enjoy many years in fine dining, before moving into private cheffing.
“This gave me the opportunity to work for high-net-worth clients and travel extensively, preparing meals in luxury homes, superyachts, and exclusive properties around the world. Being exposed to so many beautifully designed spaces sparked a growing appreciation for interiors and ultimately inspired me to explore a new creative career path.”
Design is all around
And for creative people, inspiration is everywhere. Micheal was indeed focused on the art of his culinary career, but artists are like sponges and as though by osmosis, they will absorb their surroundings, whether they intend to or not.
“I became fascinated by how thoughtful design could completely change the atmosphere of a room. That experience inspired me to learn more about interior design and eventually enrol in the Academy.”
And so, Michael couldn’t ignore his inner designer anymore. The time came to take the leap and embark on a new journey, this time in interior design. Oftentimes, the hardest part can be making the choice and stepping away from your comfort zone, but it is also a challenge to find the right path and to make it work around all the other non-career responsibilities of life. Michael began his search for both the training that he needed and the level of access that could fit around his world.
“I discovered the Academy through an online search while researching interior design courses. After comparing several options, I felt that the Academy offered the best balance of flexibility, industry-relevant content, and practical learning. The course structure suited my circumstances, and I felt confident it would provide the skills and knowledge needed to start a career in the industry.”
Learning is like a portal that when opened, almost never closes again. It is as though a door is swung wide to allow the mind to welcome new knowledge, and in its wake is an ocean of personal growth that will irrevocably wash over you. No one knows what they will learn about themselves, but it is a universal truth that everyone who dives into learning, will inevitably evolve as a person. The same applies to Michael’s learning journey. As he progresses through his coursework, he is filling his mental toolbox with interior design skills, and personal life lessons.
“The most challenging aspect of the course has been perspective drawing. It has pushed me outside my comfort zone and required a lot of practice and patience. The most interesting part has been learning about the design process and how different elements work together to create a successful interior.
One of the biggest things I’ve learned is that I’m more creative than I realised. Throughout my career, I’ve often been creating at the direction of someone else. Studying interior design has given me the opportunity to develop my own ideas and trust my own creative judgement.”
Life lessons
Now that Michael is deep into his studies, he is also broadening his horizons even more. His focus is on residential design, but he has also begun seeing new avenues and different ways of expanding those ideas.
“…the course has broadened my understanding of the industry and opened my eyes to many other opportunities within interior design. Learning about space planning, colour theory, materials, finishes, and client-focused design has expanded my interests beyond what I initially expected.”
And that’s the beauty of entering a new realm of learning, there is no knowing what you will be most inspired by and where it may lead. Michael is not only gaining confidence as a designer, but he is also smart enough to keep an open mind as to where his interior design path can take him. His experience in private dining has drawn him to the more high-end area of design, and now Michael can see a future in luxurious surroundings.
“I’m particularly drawn to high-end residential design and luxury apartment projects, where there is an opportunity to create beautiful, functional spaces that reflect a client’s lifestyle and personality.”
And why not. There are so many branches to interior design and while the intention is set in one area, there is always scope to broaden that reach and explore a variety of avenues. And Michael is embracing it all.
“There are so many exciting opportunities within the field, but one goal that really stands out to me would be working as an interior stylist for a high-end magazine, furniture brand, or design publication. Being able to combine creativity, styling, and design in that environment would be incredibly rewarding.”
With his sharp eye for design, his connection with the emotional power of interior design, and his innate urge to create, the world is Michael’s Oyster Mornay!
