From Student to Graduate - How a Diploma of Interior Design Builds Professional Designers

Interior Design Foundations to Build Upon

At the Australian Academy of Interior Design, we offer the nationally accredited MSF50222 Diploma of Interior Design. Some of those who enrol are already employed in design studios or are perhaps practising freelance, but many others enrol with a thirst for knowledge and no previous experience. The Diploma course entails 22 assignments that cover everything from the basic elements & principles of Interior Design, through to presenting a professional portfolio.

We are happy to share with you, one of our recent graduates who has stood out as an exemplary designer and has shown great growth and development during her learning journey.

Starting with the basics, this graduate delivered mood boards and drawings with a keen eye for spaces. Spatial analysis is a vital factor in designing interiors as it takes into account the single most important aspect of design; people! Spatial analysis places human beings at the centre of every space.

Human centric design is key to successful residential interiors. It is through empathy and understanding and planning the freedom and agility of movement, that wellbeing and ease of living can be introduced in a home.

Real-world Interior Design through Client Briefs

A major part of the assignment work in the Diploma in Interior Design is where students experience real-life situations through client simulations and step-by-step project management. Students will deliver client briefs based on different spaces such as kitchen, bedroom, dining room for example.

An Interior Design project, by its very nature, is a lengthy, detailed process with a number of stages that must be approached in a timely and organised manner. Some of the many stages of a project students gain in-depth knowledge of are:

  • analysis of client briefs,

  • site surveys,

  • evaluations,

  • sketches,

  • mood boards

  • and concept boards.

The students will work with a client, who can be a family member or friend, to create a real-world presentation experience and the entire project life cycle.

Our graduate delivered beautifully presented ideas of both creativity and project feasibility. Still only on Assignment 3, she was already showing signs of a professional minded designer with an eye for detail.

The Skills to Bring a Project to Life

Much of the work of an Interior Designer involves the careful coordination of tasks, suppliers, contractors, clients and stakeholders. It is for this reason that the MSF 50222 programme places a strong emphasis on Project Management and organisation.

While the choosing colour, fabrics and furniture is often the most thrilling and creative aspect of an interior design project, there are also many other areas that must be put into place.

No Interior Design project can come to fruition without at the very least, the following considerations:

  • Budgets

  • Suppliers (sourcing and communicating)

  • Materials and finishes

  • Schedule, timeline and planning

  • Collaboration with contractors and stakeholders

Students are provided templates so they can come to grips with budget planning and the synchronicity of building and design work. By the time our star graduate had reached Assignment 6, her skills were already showing signs of true professionalism.  She then went on to deliver an array of design concepts for 3 different clients, before progressing to Assignment 7 where she collated charts of finishes, ethical and legal considerations as well as budgets and scale drawings. It was clear, even at this early stage, that she was maturing as a designer.

Interior Design Portfolio Skills: CAD, Drawings and Presentation

The first assignments were already strong, with her eye for space and a natural talent for visual design but by the time she reached assignment 22, her growth as a designer was clearly evident. While the work throughout has been stellar, it was clear from her later assignments that her skills were growing exponentially. She exhibited great skill with:

  • CAD (Computer Aided Design)

  • elevations and

  • perspective drawings

All of which elevated her presentations to professional, clean, sophisticated work.

Your Interior Design Portfolio - Your Ticket to the Industry

Graduates of the MSF 50222 Diploma of Interior Design will have earned a qualification, as well as mastering a range of new skills. But the most valuable asset our graduates take with them is their portfolio. Through learning to communicate with clients, including presentations, recorded interviews and meetings, and through design history, collaboration, and critique, students learn real-world scenarios giving them the experience to take with them into the professional realm. It is through this in-depth study of Interior Design that a rich and varied portfolio can be brought to fruition.

This graduate is a perfect example of what can be achieved through:

  • Accredited courses that adhere to the highest national standards

  • Learning emphasis on professional, real-world experience

  • Mentorship through strong leadership

  • Refinement and feedback

We are proud of our graduates and are delighted to share this incredible work.
